(Kampala) – Uganda’s tourism industry has gained a new partner in its journey toward growth and sustainability. The European Union (EU) has committed €10 million (UGX 41.4 billion) to support the development of Uganda’s tourism sector, with goals that include increasing Uganda’s visibility as a sustainable travel destination, empowering local communities, and improving access to finance for businesses in the industry.
Announcing the investment, EU Ambassador to Uganda Jan Sadek highlighted the multifaceted impact of tourism on Uganda’s economy, cultural unity, and international reputation. Speaking at the Tourism Thematic Conference 2024, Ambassador Sadek underscored how the EU-backed initiative aims to build on Uganda’s natural attractions—such as its renowned national parks—and cultural heritage, transforming how Uganda is perceived globally. This substantial investment is expected to create more opportunities for local communities and businesses, enhancing Uganda’s ability to compete with other destinations worldwide.
The funding arrives as Uganda’s tourism sector continues to recover, bolstered by the nation’s extraordinary natural assets, including Murchison Falls National Park, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and Queen Elizabeth National Park. Each offers unique wildlife and ecosystems, drawing nature enthusiasts and adventure travelers alike. Other key destinations include Kidepo Valley National Park, known for its rugged terrain; Mgahinga National Park, which hosts endangered mountain gorillas; and Mountain Rwenzori, famous for its snow-capped peaks. Lake Mburo National Park, known for its birdlife and diverse wildlife, further strengthens Uganda’s appeal.

Ambassador Sadek emphasized the dual mission of the EU’s funding: to boost tourism while promoting peace and unity within Uganda. He noted that Uganda could draw on examples from countries like Rwanda and South Africa, which have used tourism to share narratives of reconciliation and progress. By enhancing Uganda’s image from past challenges to a vibrant, welcoming destination, the initiative aims to reshape perceptions and foster peace through tourism.
This support package also includes provisions for increasing local community participation in the tourism sector. For many Ugandan communities living near national parks, tourism provides both income and conservation incentives. By creating a more inclusive tourism model, the EU hopes to involve more Ugandans in areas such as accommodation services, handicrafts, tour guiding, and wildlife protection. This model will help retain tourism revenue within these communities, thereby fostering economic development and environmental stewardship.
In addition to community engagement, the EU’s funding targets the private sector, particularly small and medium enterprises facing obstacles in accessing financing. Many entrepreneurs in Uganda’s tourism industry struggle with limited capital and high borrowing costs, which restrict their growth and innovation. Through the EU’s support, the sector will receive assistance to foster business expansion in areas like lodging, transportation, guided tours, and conservation efforts. This will also create more options for tourists, including eco-friendly services and luxury experiences, expanding Uganda’s appeal to a wider array of visitors.
Uganda’s rich cultural and ecological diversity, from its vast landscapes to its vibrant communities, gives it a unique identity among African travel destinations. However, a strong international marketing strategy is essential for Uganda to reach its potential as a globally recognized, sustainable destination. The EU’s financial pledge will enable Uganda to launch digital marketing campaigns, strengthen partnerships with travel agencies, and improve the country’s image as a safe, responsible travel choice for international tourists.
