(Kampala) – Significant progress has been made on the Karuma Bridge rehabilitation, with completion anticipated before Christmas, which will enhance transportation safety and efficiency.
The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has reported major advancements in the ongoing rehabilitation of the Karuma Bridge, a critical transport link for local and regional traffic. The project includes the construction of a new concrete deck, which is currently under progress.
Eng. Lawrence Pario, head of bridges and structures at UNRA, noted that the installation of formwork is nearing 80% completion, a significant milestone in the project. He explained, “Following the demolition of the old concrete deck, the new deck casting exercise is ongoing.” After the formwork is completed, steel beams will be placed, followed by the casting of concrete. The bridge is expected to reopen before Christmas.
The rehabilitation project is designed to enhance the durability and resilience of the bridge, which is crucial for linking northern Uganda with the rest of the country. Once reopened, Karuma Bridge will facilitate safer and more efficient travel for both passengers and freight transporters. This improvement is anticipated to foster greater connectivity and promote economic growth across the region.
Originally constructed in 1962, the Karuma Bridge was already more than a decade beyond its intended lifespan when significant structural defects were identified earlier this year. In May, the government took the precautionary measure of closing the bridge to heavy vehicles, including buses, trucks, and trailers, as engineers began repairs. This initial closure was intended to last for three months.
However, further assessments revealed that a comprehensive overhaul of the bridge was necessary to restore its integrity. In addition to repairing major supporting structures, the entire surface of the bridge was removed and refurbished. During the closure, traffic was diverted to Murchison Falls National Park.
UNRA’s commitment to timely and safe delivery reflects the authority’s dedication to infrastructure development in Uganda. Transporters and local residents are eager for the bridge’s reopening, especially as the festive season approaches, which typically sees increased travel activity.
