(Kampala) – Uganda’s tourism sector has received a boost with the introduction of a new mobile app designed to centralize information on travel destinations, attractions, events, accommodations, and essential services. This initiative by the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) aims to make Uganda more accessible and appealing to tourists, particularly as the sector recovers from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Uganda, known for its natural beauty and unique wildlife, has seen steady growth in tourism revenue, with potential earnings projected to reach billions in foreign income. Industry experts view the app as a timely step forward in revitalizing and expanding tourism, positioning it as a major pillar of the economy alongside manufacturing, agro-processing, and ICT.

Currently, many visitors hear about Uganda through personal connections or tour operators, but negative news reports—covering issues like terrorist threats, disease outbreaks, and natural disasters—can dissuade potential tourists. The new app addresses this concern by acting as a reliable source of timely information, aiming to reassure travelers that Uganda is a safe destination with measures in place to address health and security issues. For example, tourists will be able to access updates about increased security measures or localized health advisories, helping them make well-informed travel decisions.

By consolidating such data into a single platform, UTB hopes to counteract adverse media narratives and emphasize Uganda’s positive qualities, making information about safe travel routes, tourist-friendly areas, and emergency contacts readily available. Through this app, tourists can easily locate attractions and know where to find nearby police stations or alternative routes if natural obstacles such as flooding or landslides occur.

For local Ugandans, the app also presents an opportunity to market and sell local products, contributing to the economy while enhancing the tourism experience.

Tourism has the potential to be a significant revenue generator for Uganda, and recent figures indicate a post-COVID recovery, with visitor numbers approaching pre-pandemic levels. By embracing technology, the Ugandan tourism industry can harness this growth momentum, ensuring travelers have positive and secure experiences while exploring the country’s attractions.

Tourism App Features Benefits for Tourists and Local Businesses
Information on destinations and events Informs travelers about key attractions and cultural events
Accommodation and service listings Provides tourists with options for lodging and local services
Safety updates and crisis information Guides tourists to secure routes and informs of emergency spots
Marketing platform for local products Enables local businesses to reach a broader tourist audience

The Uganda Tourism Board envisions the app as a one-stop source for visitors, helping them find answers to all their questions before and during their stay. With accurate, real-time information at their fingertips, tourists will be better equipped to enjoy Uganda’s natural wonders and cultural heritage.
