Discover the Adventure of Fishing at Murchison Falls National Park

The Murchison Nile is renowned for its world-class fishing opportunities, boasting iconic species like the legendary Nile Perch and abundant Catfish. In fact, a record-breaking 108 Kg Nile Perch was reeled in near the foot of the falls back in 2002. To embark on your fishing adventure, fishing permits can be easily obtained from the UWA park office in South Paraa.

What We Offer

Limited fishing gear and binoculars are available for rent at the lodge, ensuring you have everything you need for a memorable fishing experience.

Fishing Safaris at Murchison Falls National Park

Fishing at Murchison Falls isn’t just a hobby; it’s an exhilarating sport that takes you along the majestic Nile. Cast your lures to catch larger species like the Nile Perch or opt for live bait to reel in smaller treasures like the Tiger Fish. As you navigate the waters, be prepared for encounters with the park’s diverse wildlife, including the majestic hippos and Nile crocodiles.

Where to Go Fishing in Murchison Falls

There are two prime fishing sites in Murchison Falls: one near Paraa, located below the falls, and another below the Karuma falls at Chobe Safari Lodge. Currently, sport fishing is primarily conducted at the base of the falls, either from boats downstream or from the rocky riverbanks.

Getting There

Murchison Falls National Park is approximately a 6-hour drive from Kampala. Due to the park’s terrain, it’s recommended to travel in a spacious 4×4 vehicle, ensuring both comfort and space for your fishing equipment. Alternatively, you can opt for a chartered flight from Entebbe Airport or Kajjansi Airstrip to shorten your travel time.

Best Time for Fishing

Fishing in Murchison Falls is a year-round activity, with prime catches available early in the morning and late in the day. For optimal results, consider visiting during the dry season from Mid-January to Early-April when water levels are lower, providing clearer waters and increased fish activity.

Fishing Methods, Equipment, and Fish Types

During your fishing expedition, you’ll employ various techniques such as casting lures, spinning, and using live bait. Nile Perch, Catfish, Tiger Fish, and other species await your skilled angling. Ensure you’re equipped with the right gear, including rods ranging from 8 to 11 feet with a multiplier reel for larger species and a 7’ spinning rod for smaller catches.

Other Wildlife to See

While fishing, immerse yourself in the park’s breathtaking landscapes and diverse wildlife, including elephants, waterbucks, and an array of bird species.

What to Wear

Protect yourself from the sun’s rays with adequate sun protection gear, including long socks, sleeves, trousers, and insect repellents to ward off bugs and tsetse flies. For a successful fishing excursion, rely on experienced and skilled fishing guides to navigate the waters.
